If you are a regular reader, you will already know that we put on an annual bash for Catholic Charities of the North Shore each year, here at the Hawthorne Hotel.

This year’s theme was Celebrating 90 — in honor of their 90th anniversary of service to the people of the North Shore of Massachusetts.

We decided to create five decade-representative areas of food, drink and festivities to celebrate that achievement. This blog post will give you a look at what went on for the event.

I hope you enjoy seeing what we did.

The 1920s marked the beginning of Catholic Charities of the North Shore. It also was the decade of the speakeasy, bathtub gin, flappers, jazz, and all things “roaring twenties” that we know and love.

A popular hors d’oeuvre would have been celery stuffed with pimento cream cheese.

Deviled Eggs were also popularized during this decade.

A classic entree of the period was patty shells with Chicken a la King

Meat Balls in “Italian Gravy” were definitely popular during this decade, and many to come. They are still a favorite of our staff!

Pineapple Upside Down Cake made its debut during this time period.

. . . as did Snickerdoodles.

The 40s were great fun for us to replicate. An antique stove that was ‘rented’ from a local second-hand store set the tone, and the clothesline full of 40s clothing that we hung across our Grand Ballroom added just the right touch. The use of ‘lace’ table runners, and some other accessories really gave everyone the feeling that they had happened into their grandmother’s house. Just what we were looking for.

Life it too uncertain — eat dessert first! These yummy “York” peppermint patty brownies were awesome.

Did you know that Rice Krispies Treats were invented in the 40s?

You either love it or hate it, but the people that loved it really made this a ‘hit’ of the evening — creamed chipped beef on toast.

Trout Amandine was the 40s nod to ‘fancy’ food.

Hearts of iceberg lettuce with two classic ’40s’ dressings.

The 60s were a decade of peace, love, flower-power, tie-dye, and other iconic symbols. This colorful decade was easy to replicate, and we chose this time to represent in the ice carving as well.

Flower-power, lava lamps and bright colors were all fun to use in creating this themed area of the 60s.

Using ’store-bought’ ingredients to create menu items really gained steam in the 60s. These hors d’oeuvres of Ritz crackers with a spicy tomato aspic are very representative of that trend.

Crepes were something that became very popular in the 60s with the input and influence created by Julia Child’s and her “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”

While we began exploring cuisines of different cultures in this decade, we were still holding firmly to our comfort foods of the 50s, including all manner of molded gelatin desserts.

Penny Candies really began to take off in the 60s with much more disposable income, as well as the need for ‘munchies’ created by a number of influences.

For the 80’s we turned our Tavern into a Fern Bar. The first Fern Bar was likely a place called “Henry Africa’s” in San Francisco. It’s huge popularity spawned chains of similar places, such as Bennigan’s and TGI Friday’s.

During the 80s more exotic foods became popular, such as tropical fruits, and especially kiwis. In addition, regional cuisine started to become recognized in mainstream dining, with the rise of Cajun chefs such as Paul Prudhomme from New Orleans. We served Red Beans and Rice, and Blackened Fish on our menu.

Boboli Pizza was created in the 80s so we set up a Boboli Pizza Stations, where guests could create their own pizza slice with the variety of toppings we offered.

Northern Italian Cities to Ban Cars This Sunday

On Sunday, cities and towns across northern Italy will be smog-free for the day, according to Italian news agency ANSA. Northern Italy faces the country’s highest concentration of smog, and to combat the industrialized region’s smog problem, 80 cities and towns have agreed to take vehicles off the road on February 28.

Turin mayor Sergio Chiamparino, backed by several other mayors of northern Italian cities, announced the anti-smog day last week. Chiamparino emphasized that the one-day traffic halt must be followed by long-term smog-reducing measures. He hopes that Italy will continue to fight its smog problem by providing incentives to consumers who buy environmentally-friendly cars and pushing for greener, more efficient energy.

Although traffic bans have previously been performed several times in Milan and other cities, the February 28 ban is the first official, organized vehicle ban in northern Italy. Cities participating in the automobile ban range from bigger cities like Bologna to small towns. – Elaine Murphy

Wedding That Has Definitely “Gone to the Dogs”

Salem, MA is a very special place. We just never know what is going to happen next in our great old city, and this past week was no exception.

We recently learned that two dogs who live in Salem are having a very formal wedding, and many people in Salem have gotten involved to help make this truly special indeed.

This is the story of two Schipperke dogs, who through their owner, and a certain amount of happenstance, met, fell in love, and are now going to “tie the knot” with a ceremony on the beach here in Salem.

The dogs are Cricket (the bride) and Black Magic (the groom), and you can see some photos of them getting ready for their big day right here on our blog.

Cricket’s wedding “gown” is being handmade by Nancy Ripa of “Living with Pets”, a great little pet store located only a couple of blocks away from the Hawthorne Hotel. It seems like Nancy gets involved with so many pet-related activities here. She is the one who provides welcome gifts for all the pets staying with us at the Hawthorne Hotel.

Cricket must be the best-behaved dog ever, to be standing still for this kind of attention. I cannot even imagine my dogs not ripping the roses to shreds just by being near them, let alone standing and posing with a dress that had a three-foot long train. How about you, fair blog reader?

If you look really closely at the flowers on the train of Cricket’s dress, you will see a ladybug, which I am told is the official bug of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. And what else would any self-respecting dog need to have on her wedding “gown” than a bug — right?!!

So, what is the involvement of the Hawthorne Hotel with this darling couple’s upcoming nuptials, you might ask? Well, of course they will be spending the first night of their “honeymoon” in one of our pet-friendly suites here at the hotel. We decided to provide this as our wedding gift to the first canine couple we know to go to such lengths as to have a formal wedding, and as a part of our involvement in the fabric of life here in Salem, Massachusetts.

We will keep you posted if there is more follow up information we feel you might want to know about this cute canine couple.

SALEM, MA — In sunglasses, pearls, and the coif known to millions, infamous performance artist Karen Finley is the very image of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in The Jackie Look, coming to PEM’s Morse Auditorium on Friday, June 4 at 7:30 PM.

Known for her scandalous performances, risqué subject matter, and provocative artistic adventures in honey and chocolate, Finley’s newest one-woman show unfolds in dramatic form as a lecture after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Against a backdrop of photographs taken throughout Mrs. Onassis’s life, Finley explores the world’s obsession with her image, grief, appearance, and persona.

“Looking at the most photographed woman of her time,” Finley says, “the performance considers the public/private place of looking, the gaze of trauma, the process of memory and documentation.”

An acclaimed and controversial artist, Finley creates installations, sculptures, and performances around the world. In the 1990s, Finley was labeled “Public Enemy No. 1” by Jesse Helms as one of the “NEA Four” at the center of a political debate on federal funding of controversial artists. The case eventually went to the Supreme Court.

Flowers with Clapboards, Salem, MA

If you are a Hawthorne Hotel Blog-reader from last year, you know about my “flowers with brick” series of photos that I posted here. Well, that was last year, and this is now. I have decided that this year’s series of flowers photos will be “flowers with clapboards” since many of the homes in the historic districts of Salem are sided with clapboards.

These beautiful trees are in front of the Pierce-Nichols House here in Salem. It is located on Federal Street at North Street, in the historic McIntire District. They are such a joy to see; I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. If you want to walk there to see them yourself, they are only about a 10-minute walk from the Hawthorne Hotel.

And I hope you enjoy this close-up look at bits and pieces of historic Salem, MA. as I post varying photos throughout this year.

Pansies are Lemon Drop Yellow

These beautiful pansies, called Lemon Drop Yellow, are grown just for us, and the plants in the rear of the planter boxes are miniature boxwoods.

We buy all of the plants for our planter boxes from Nunan’s Greenhouses in Georgetown, MA in case you are looking for these same plants. We get many requests for this information, so I thought I would share it with you here. I just got off of the phone with the owner, who says they do have a few of the pansies left, so you may want to beat feet to Georgetown soon.

I hope you enjoy knowing just a little bit more about the Hawthorne Hotel and our beautiful planter boxes.

River Ebro

The River Ebro has the greatest discharge of water and is the longest river in Spain. There is an incredible diverse landscape visible along the long winding route of the majestic river which is up to 300 meters wide in places.

The Ebro travels across Castilla-Leon, Pais Vasco, La Rioja, Navarra, Aragon and Catalonia, and Mirando de Ebro, Haro, Logroño, Tudela, Zaragoza and Tortosa, the river finally reaches the Mediterranean where it fans out to form the Delta de Ebro covering 320 km², one of the most important wetlands in Europe.
